Earth, Air, Fire, Water: The Four Hand Shapes
The four hand shapes — earth, air, fire, water — are the first thing read in palm reading, before any line: they set the key in which all the lines sound. The shape is determined from two simple measures — the palm (square or oblong) and the finger length (shorter or longer than the palm).

Why elements?
Nineteenth-century palmistry adopted the four-element system of Western astrology — the same elements that sort the twelve zodiac signs into four families. A fire hand and a fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) describe the same base type from two directions: once read off the body, once off the date of birth. Know both, and you hold two maps of the same temperament.
How do shape and lines read together?
The shape is the resonance chamber: a sloping, imaginative head line sounds different in a sober earth hand than in a water hand — there it amplifies, here it is grounded. That is why every serious reading starts with the shape: without the key, you misread the lines.
